Darth Vader The Face Of Android In Japan

In a move that only the Japanese would dare, NTT the countries largest teleco has chosen to make Darth Vader the face for their flagship Samsung Galaxy S Android powered smart phone. This sort of goes against the whole Google "Do no evil" motto... though some might find turning to the dark side cool I suppose, and let's face it we all kinda dig Darth Vader anyway. Perhaps they are trying to work the "galaxy far, far, away..." angle? Whatever it is I'm a bit drawn to the ad, so perhaps it's working!

It Was Only A Matter Of Time - Droid R2-D2

In keeping with yesterday's post regarding the cast of Star Wars invading Orlando on the weekend, Motorola, Google, and Verizon are hinting at a new android phone called.... wait for it... Droid R2-D2. The phone maker seems to have had no issue in making a white model (ahemmm!) with graphics on the back that resemble the lovable and trusty droid from the Star Wars franchise.

According to cnet "Over the weekend, one of Verizon's official twitter accountsposted the picture you see to the left. As you can clearly see, the phone bears more than a passing resemblance to our favorite little Astromech. The entire back of the phone looks exactly like R2-D2 with a white base for the design."

Here's a link if you are interested in finding out more:

Hmmm.... Powerful... This Laser Is

The force has come down upon a Hong Kong-based manufacturer, Wicked Lasers, who makes and sells a product  called the Spyder III Pro Arctic Laser. The problem, it seems is that George Lucas and his company Lucasfilm believes the device too closely resembles the lightsaber made famous by the Star Wars franchise, and according to a cease and desist letter "It is apparent from the design of the Pro Arctic Laser that it was intended to resemble the hilts of our lightsaber swords, which are protected by copyright."

In it's defense Wicked Lasers contends that the Pro-Arctic is "real while the lightsaber is imaginary." I'd say they have a point there... however you might want to act quickly if you intend upon purchasing one of these lightsaber like devices as I fear the force is strong with Mr Lucas.

Wired's Geek-o'-Lantern Contest

Having been born in October I've always loved Halloween, and traditionally it's been my task to carve the family pumpkin. From humble beginnings of jagged teeth and triangle eyes, I've really tried to step it up a notch or two as I've garnered some experience. I've done some good ones ,and some not so good ones, but I'll have to bow to the greatness that is present in the submissions to Wired's "Show Us Your Wired Geek-o-Lanterns". You've got to check out Yoda, The Deathstar, Venom, and Frankenstien for all of their intricate beauty, but perhaps my favorite is Cannibal! It's not all that geeky but it certainly looks like Jack-o-Lantern that I might be able to re-create.

The Ultimate In Geek Culture

It's probably safe for me to assume that you are a geek, since you are reading this blog. Then it's probably also safe for me to assume that you will appreciate this ASCII version of the original Star Wars movie! I can only imagine how much time must have gone into producing this tribute flick. You've got to check it out...

Windows XP and earlier:
  1. Go to Start > Run.
  2. In the Run box, type “cmd” ( without the quotes ) and hit OK to open the command prompt windows.
  3. Within command prompt, type “telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl” ( without the quotes ) and hit ENTER.
  4. Enjoy!

MAC users, go to Terminal and type “telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl” (without the quotes).

Finally WiFi!

Sitting in the Orlando International Airport waiting for a flight to Boston. This is the first WiFi hotspot I've had in a week and I'm anxious to get caught up on the blogging. Too many things to discuss, need to sort out my thoughts and put together some vacation posts. Until then, look who I ran into in Florida!

Another failed X-Wing launch

Wired brings us yet another failed attempt to launch an X-Wing fighter! It would seem that crazed Star Wars fans have nothing better to do with their money, as this is not the first attempt we've seen on YouTube. "Amateur rocketeer Andy Woerner led the 2,500-hour, $7,000 effort to get the thing airborne. His 40-person crew of doctors, mail carriers, construction workers, and other Star Wars obsessives labored without a blueprint, guided mainly by memories of George Lucas' magnum opus, scaled-up measurements taken from a 15-inch model, and their own high midichlorian counts. The biggest challenges: figuring out how to make the hinged wings lock into attack position and ensuring that all four class-M rocket engines would fire at the same time." In the video, they say they are doing it for the kids but I'm not so sure...

Droids in space!

I was surfing the NASA site just now trying to find out a little info about the shuttle payload, namely Luke Skywalker's lightsabre that was carried aboard in celebration of Star Wars 30th anniversary. While that is a pretty cool event, I found an interesting story that I don't recall ever reading about before and it's totally inspired by Star Wars with a little Star Trek for good measure! It's describes as "a self-propelled, floating, talking, computerized personal assistant with artificial intelligence" that was inspired by the floating globe that Luke Skywalker used for lightsabre training in the original flick. The "robot will fly autonomously around the shuttle or space station, floating effortlessly in orbital free fall and propelling itself with 6 small ducted fans.", with Star Trek tricorder like capabilities, "the PSA will have sensors that can detect the pressure and temperature of the ambient air, as well as concentrations of gases such as CO2." This is awesome!

Time lapse lego movie

I'm not sure what is more impressive, the fact that these two young men took the time to build a Millenium Falcon out of lego, or the fact that they also took the time to make a time lapse movie out of the event. Bravo Paul and Greg!

Star Wars geeks rejoice!

Star Wars fans can now celebrate the 30th anniversary of Star Wars by mashing up some of their favourite clips into their own production. George Lucas and company have released to the public over 300 clips from the movie franchise and have provided the site Star Wars Mashups to allow users to showcase their finished products. The site is moderated to ensure that you don't take too much liberty with the clips but also has a "most popular" feature to allow your best efforts to rise to the top. If you've ever dreamed about being part of the Star Wars production team... here is your chance to showcase your talents.
