It Was Only A Matter Of Time - Droid R2-D2

In keeping with yesterday's post regarding the cast of Star Wars invading Orlando on the weekend, Motorola, Google, and Verizon are hinting at a new android phone called.... wait for it... Droid R2-D2. The phone maker seems to have had no issue in making a white model (ahemmm!) with graphics on the back that resemble the lovable and trusty droid from the Star Wars franchise. 

According to cnet "Over the weekend, one of Verizon's official twitter accountsposted the picture you see to the left. As you can clearly see, the phone bears more than a passing resemblance to our favorite little Astromech. The entire back of the phone looks exactly like R2-D2 with a white base for the design."

New iPhone Rumoured For This Summer

According to this article in the Globe and Mail, the Wall Street Journal is citing unnamed sources as responsible for rumors surrounding an upcoming new iPhone from Apple and in particular a version designed specifically for the Verizon network. Currently AT&T is the only authorized carrier of the iPhone in the U.S.

Both Apple and Verizon are refusing to comment.

Curve Out Sells iPhone In Q1

The LA Times is reporting that "Research in Motion's BlackBerry Curve replaced the iPhone as the best-selling smartphone among consumers in the first quarter, the NPD Group said Monday. The iPhone came in second, with two other BlackBerry models -- the Storm and the Pearl -- right behind." The NPD Group is attributing the shift to an aggressive advertising campaign by Verizon Wireless who offered a buy-one-get-one deal on Blackberrys. "The more familiar and less expensive Curve benefited from these giveaways and was able to leapfrog the iPhone, due to its broader availability on the four major U.S. national carriers," Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis at NPD, said in a report.

Verizon Says Obama's Cellphone Account Compromised

Barak Obama's cellphone carrier, Verizon, has acknowledged that a number of unauthorized employees have accessed the president elects cellphone account. “This week we learned that a number of Verizon Wireless employees have, without authorization, accessed and viewed president-elect Barack Obama’s personal cellphone account," chief executive officer, Lowell McAdam said in a statement. The account was apparently a simple cellphone account and not a Blackberry data account and was also inactive for several months. The incidents come as there is much debate over whether or not the new President should be allowed to use his Blackberry device while in office.

Led Zeppelin to sell back catalog online

One of the last big holdouts, Led Zeppelin, said their back catalog, including "Communication Breakdown," "Whole Lotta Love" and "Stairway to Heaven," will be available from online music stores Nov. 13th. The two-CD retrospective, "Mothership," will be released the same day. It appears as though they are going digital in a big way, also signing a deal with Verizon Wireless to offer their songs as ringtones and downloads to mobile phones. Wired News story here.
