Hacking Your Own Jumbotron

I'm thinking that I found myself a diy project! Junkyard Jumbotron is the brainchild of Rick Borovoy, Ph.D. and Brian Knep at MIT's Center for Future Civic Media. I do believe that I have all of the required parts and I'll post my own video if it all comes together. Check out the video below, all you need to know is there.

"How's it work?

There's a Python script (gmail.py) to be run on any Bluetooth-enabled
device with Python installed (I use an Android phone, you could use a
laptop). The script simply downloads your Gmail RSS feed to see how
much unread e-mail you have, and sends that number over a serial port
every two seconds. I use /dev/rfcomm0, which is the serial device that
connects my phone to the Bluetooth dongle on my Lilypad.

There's also a C program (lilypad.pde) that runs on the Lilypad, reads
a number over the serial port, and renders that number on a set of LEDs
(I use seven LEDs). That's it."

College Student Builds 1/2 Scale Tank For Paintballing

College Student, Will Foster, has built himself a 1/2 scale Tiger Tank! The tank, complete with a paintball firing turret and a rebuilt diesel generator for a motor is surprisingly agile and according to Foster has raised a lot of suspicion amongst the neighbours! Check it out!

Big Brother - feline edition

Juergen Perthold decided to spy on Mr. Lee, a stray cat that he and his wife adopted. It seems that Mr. Lee liked having regular meals but didn't like the house rules and often fell into his wandering ways. Juergen decided to put his engineering background to work and devised a collar based camera that takes pictures at intervals. Now with a web site to share Mr. Lee's travels and to provide step by step directions to creating your own kittycam, Perthold and Mr. Lee are becoming Internet celebs. As I said in Juergen's guestbook, my cat is an indoor cat but this might be a good way to hunt dust bunnies. Happy travels Mr. Lee!
