User Generated Hyper Local News Ala Fwix

One year old startup Fwix is releasing an iPhone app later this week to assist would be reporters in capturing the news. “We believe we are the real-time local newswire,” said Darian Shirazi, Fwix’s 22-year-old founder. With local news no longer covering local stories like they once did, Fwix hopes to fill the void with user generated content about car accidents, fires, and grand openings provided by an army of unpaid locals armed with iPhones. According to the New York Times "Mr. Shirazi said Fwix would offer more relevant updates. Its software ranks items based on whether other users submit articles that mention similar events and locations and if the person was at the scene, information it gleans from the iPhone’s GPS location data."

Wired's How-To Wiki has a step by step guide for upgrading your Mac to, OS X 10.6, otherwise known as Snow Leopard. In the article Wired promises to "walk you through the things you should do before you make the leap to Snow Leopard, and how to go about the actual installation, including how to install it even if you aren't using its predecessor, OS X 10.5 Leopard." Don't expect major new features however, Snow Leopard is said to be "more about incremental upgrades, refinements and speed boosts."

A study conducted by German sports psychologists at the University of Munster, and reported in New Scientist magazine has concluded that athletes who wear red score 10 per cent more in any competition than if they were in another colour. "If one competitor is strong and the other weak, it won't change the outcome of the fight," said Norbert Hagemann, who led the study. "But the closer the levels, the easier it is for the colour to tip the scale." In the study "the researchers showed video clips of taekwondo bouts to 42 experienced referees. One combatant wore blue, the other red. They then showed them the same clips but digitally manipulated the clothing to swap the colours. The fighters wearing red were given an average of 13 per cent more points than when they were blue."

Interestingly another study conducted in 2004 by Durham University scientists showed that 55% of Olympic combat sports were won by the competitor in red. I wonder if the same is true in video games?

Why Adults Are Responsible For Fueling Twitter's Growth

NYTimes writer Claire Cain Miller explains in the Bits blog that Twitter's growth is due in part to the increasing popularity of social media sites amongst adults, while teens have been in the game for much longer. "But one big reason for the disparity is simple: When Twitter became popular, teenagers already had their favorite Web sites for communicating, so they were not interested in a new one. The people who discovered Twitter were adults who were new to social networking." As an early adopter who is definitely not in his teens, I take some offense to the notion that adults are new to the social media game. However, I'd have to agree with the assessment of the populous in general. Maybe I'm just getting old and cranky?

HTC Rumoured To Have Low Price Android Phone Ready

The yet to be announced HTC Click, which is expected to launch in the fourth quarter, is reported to cost around $300. This price point would put the Click in the range of being one the lowest priced Android phones available.

According to cnet "The Click's design is similar to the MyTouch 3G with some minor changes. The phone is touch screen only and it features a smaller 2.8-inch display. Gone is the trackball and in its place is a large circular directional pad. HTC has committed to start including a 3.5-millimeter headset jack on all phones and the Click has this highly requested feature." and the phone is said to offer the full android experience even at the low price, which is good news to those looking at getting into a smartphone but not wanting to blow the rent money.

Air Canada Launches iPhone App

Air Canada has released an iPhone/iPod Touch application that, according to the CBC, allows passengers to "check in with their device, select their seat, retrieve electronic boarding passes and keep track of real-time flight status and information."

"This is only the first iteration of our app, and we will continue to add new features in response to customer demand." Air Canada executive vice-president Ben Smith said of the application developed for the airline by IBM Canada.
